At the Register

scanning bar code
The cashier rings up Tom's purchases... by scanning bar codes...
pressing keys
...and pressing keys on the cash register.
cashier tells total
She tells him the total to pay.

Paying with Cash

taking money from wallet
He takes some money out of his wallet...
giving money
...and gives it to her.
putting money in register
She puts it into the register...
taking out change
...and takes out his change.
counting change
She counts it out to him...
giving receipt
...and gives it to him with his receipt.

Paying by Check

writing a check
He writes out a check.

Paying by Credit Card

For Special Attention

ring something up = to make a machine record its price. — 让收银机记录下商品的价格。
scan a bar code = to shine light quickly on it. — 快速用光线照在条形码上。
change = the money you give the cashier is more than the total price; the difference is your change. — 你付给收银员的钱超过应付总额，多出的部分就是找零。
code = a set of symbols that has a meaning; usually this meaning is clear only if you have special knowledge. A bar code uses dark bars as its symbols; an approval code uses numbers. — 一组有含义的符号，通常只有具备专业知识的人才能看懂。条形码用深色线条作符号，授权码用数字。
