telling the driver where she wanted to go
...and told the driver where she wanted to go.

giving the driver directions
During the ride, she gave the driver directions.

For Special Attention

give directions = to tell someone how to get somewhere or how to do something — 告诉别人怎么到达某处或怎么做某事。
tip = extra money you give to someone to thank them for good service — 额外多给一些钱,感谢对方的优质服务。
hail a taxi = other ways to say this are "Wave for a taxi," "Wave down a taxi," and "Flag down a taxi." — 其他说法有"Wave for a taxi.""Wave down a taxi.""Flag down a taxi."(挥手拦出租车)。
taxis that pass by = taxis that go past someone without stopping — 从人身边开过却不停的出租车。
check the meter = to look quickly at the meter to see what it says — 快速看一眼计价器,看上面显示多少。
