Taking Care of a Lawn

Pam filled her lawn mower's gas tank,...

...then started the mower by pulling the cord.

She mowed the lawn by pushing the mower back and forth.

Where the mower couldn't reach, she trimmed the grass by hand.

She raked up the grass clippings...

...and put them on a compost pile.

She spread some grass seed on bare spots...

...and then watered the lawn.

mow the lawn = mow the lawn = cut the grass. — mow the lawn 就是割草的意思。

by hand = notice by hand: no "a," no "the," no "her." — 注意 by hand 这个说法：前面不加 a、the 或 her。

compost pile = a compost pile contains old leaves, grass, twigs, etc. — 堆肥堆里有枯叶、草、细枝等。

clip = "clip" as in clippers and clippings means "cut." — clippers 和 clippings 中的 clip 意思是"剪"。

grass seed = grass seed grows to become grass. — 草种发芽后长成草。

water the lawn = to water the lawn is to put water on it. This is also called "sprinkling" the lawn. — 给草坪浇水就是往上面洒水，也叫 sprinkling the lawn。

lawn = a lawn is an area of land, near a house, where grass grows. — 草坪是房子附近长草的一块地。
